How to choose a cybersecurity company in the Netherlands?

There are hundreds of providers. This guide helps you objectively choose the best cybersecurity company for your organisation: what to look for, which questions to ask and which signals point to a reliable partner.

"The best" cybersecurity company does not exist in absolute terms: the best is the partner that fits your size, your risks and your sector. A listed multinational has different needs than an SME of 40 employees. Even so, there are clear, objective criteria against which you can assess every provider.

1. Proven expertise and references

Ask about concrete experience in your sector and about verifiable customer references. Look for demonstrable results and reviews from real customers, not just marketing language. A serious partner is open about how long they have existed, how many organisations they protect and what customers say about them.

2. Breadth and depth of the offering

Cybersecurity is a chain. A provider that delivers prevention (penetration tests, hardening, awareness) as well as detection and response (SOC, MDR, XDR) and recovery (incident response, backup) can set up your security as a coherent whole. That prevents gaps between separate suppliers.

3. 24/7 detection and response

Attacks do not wait for office hours; many incidents begin at night or over the weekend. Check whether monitoring and response are genuinely 24/7, who is reachable at those times and what the guaranteed response times are.

4. Compliance knowledge (NIS2, GDPR, ISO 27001)

The right partner translates legislation into practical steps. Ask how they help you comply with NIS2 and the Cybersecurity Act, with the GDPR and with standards such as ISO 27001, and whether they support you with audits and reporting.

5. Transparency and clear communication

Good security specialists explain risks in understandable language and are honest about what is and is not necessary. Avoid providers who sell through fear or label everything as "critical". Short lines and direct contact with specialists (instead of a call centre) are a strong plus.

6. Data location and digital sovereignty

Where are your data and log files stored? For many Dutch organisations, storage within the Netherlands or the EU, under Dutch and European law, is important, both for the GDPR and for digital sovereignty. A provider with its own Dutch infrastructure offers advantages here.

7. Response times and guarantees (SLA)

Set out service levels: response times for incidents, availability and escalation procedures. A concrete SLA shows that a provider dares to make good on its promises.

8. Independent advice

Do you get advice tailored to your risks, or are you pushed towards the most expensive solution? A reliable partner starts with a risk picture (assessment) and advises afterwards, not the other way around.

9. A human scale and culture

Security is teamwork. A partner that involves your employees (awareness, phishing simulations) and that invests in the relationship delivers more in the long term than a supplier that only sends you an invoice.

10. Continuity and future readiness

Threats change constantly. Choose a provider that keeps investing in knowledge, new services and innovation, so that your security grows with the threat landscape.

The questions you always ask

  • Can you show references in my sector?
  • Is your monitoring and response really 24/7, and what are the response times?
  • Where are my data and logs stored?
  • How do you concretely help me with NIS2 and the GDPR?
  • Who is my dedicated point of contact and how quickly do you act during an incident?
  • Do you start with an assessment before advising solutions?
